Visiting our reindeer at Whitetail Acres Reindeer Farm is always a magical experience, but you might notice that some of our reindeer look a little different each year. That is because reindeer naturally shed their antlers annually. While we hope they keep both through the Christmas season, sometimes a reindeer may lose one before Christmas Eve. This is a normal part of their life cycle and nothing to worry about.
New antlers begin to grow in the spring and are fully formed by August. Around the first or second week of August, the blood flow to the antler stops, and the velvet covering begins to crack. The reindeer will rub off the velvet, revealing the bright white antlers we all recognize.
Visiting the reindeer in person allows you to see these incredible animals up close and learn more about their natural behaviors from our experienced handlers. During your private reindeer encounter, you and your group can feed and pet the reindeer, ask questions, and even take a photo with Santa’s sleigh.
