Why Do Reindeer Hooves Click? A Fun Holiday Fact from Whitetail Acres Reindeer Farm

If you have ever heard a reindeer walk, you may notice a gentle clicking sound with each step. Many people imagine that it is the sound of reindeer landing on rooftops as they pull Santa’s sleigh, but the real reason is even more fascinating.

Reindeer hooves truly do click, and it all comes down to their amazing anatomy. With each step, tendons snap over the bones in their back hooves. This natural movement creates a clear clicking sound. The noise is more than just interesting. It helps reindeer stay together, even during harsh winter weather. In heavy snow and strong winds, reindeer can follow the sound of the clicks to locate the rest of the herd. They simply listen and move toward the group.

This is just one of many reasons why reindeer are such remarkable animals and why guests of all ages love meeting them during our Reindeer Encounters at Whitetail Acres.

Discover the Magic of Reindeer Antlers at Whitetail Acres

Visiting our reindeer at Whitetail Acres Reindeer Farm is always a magical experience, but you might notice that some of our reindeer look a little different each year. That is because reindeer naturally shed their antlers annually. While we hope they keep both through the Christmas season, sometimes a reindeer may lose one before Christmas Eve. This is a normal part of their life cycle and nothing to worry about.

New antlers begin to grow in the spring and are fully formed by August. Around the first or second week of August, the blood flow to the antler stops, and the velvet covering begins to crack. The reindeer will rub off the velvet, revealing the bright white antlers we all recognize.

Visiting the reindeer in person allows you to see these incredible animals up close and learn more about their natural behaviors from our experienced handlers. During your private reindeer encounter, you and your group can feed and pet the reindeer, ask questions, and even take a photo with Santa’s sleigh.

Bring the whole family for a cozy holiday experience by the bonfire with hot chocolate, apple cider, and popcorn. Make new memories and enjoy the sights, sounds, and magic of Christmas while spending time with Santa’s real reindeer.
